five—a sufficient number for the remainder of
the expedition.

progress very difficult, owing to the route being
so precipitous. We reached our goal however
by 11.40 a.m. The view was magnificent: we
found ourselves at an elevation of more than
20,000 feet and yet did not feel the cold.
